Marvel movies came under the spotlight when Martin Scorsese began the debate on whether or not MCU movies should be considered cinema. The Irishman director spoke to Empire last month and expressed that MCU movies are “not cinema” to him. The filmmaker recently went on to add that he was “worried” that young audiences would think Marvel movies are cinema. To top it off, The Godfather director Francis Ford Coppola chipped in to the debate and added that Marvel movies are “despicable.” All this time, several Marvel star, including Robert Downey Jr, Taika Waititi, James Gunn, Natalie Portman and others defended these superhero movies.

Now, Disney CEO Bob Iger has broken his silence about Scorsese and Coppola’s comments against Marvel movies and said it doesn’t bother him. However, he is bothered on behalf of the people who have helped bring the Marvel Cinematic Universe this far. Speaking with the Wall Street Journal, Iger said, “Well, it doesn’t bother me. Except I’m bothered on behalf of the people who worked on those movies. I don’t take it personally.”

He says that the two Oscar-winning directors have a right to their opinions and adds he has the highest regard for the two. However, he points out that Coppola’s words were a little too harsh. “When Francis uses the words ‘those films are despicable?’ To whom is he talking? Is he talking to Kevin Feige who runs Marvel? Or Taika Waititi, who directs, or Ryan Coogler who directs for us? Or Scarlett Johansson or Chad Boseman? I could name a number of people, Robert Downey Jr.?” Iger asks.

Iger also pointed out that it seems so disrespectful to people who worked hard to bring out these movies. He compares Black Panter director Ryan Coogler with Scorsese and Coppola to ask, “It seems so disrespectful to all the people that work on those films who are working just as hard as the people that work on their films and are putting their creative souls on the line, just like they are. You telling me Ryan Coogler making Black Panther is doing something some how or another less than what Marty Scorsese or Francis Ford Coppola have ever done on any one of their movies? Come on. Yeah, I said it.”
