Newcastle United 1-0 Chelsea, Premier League: Post-match reaction, ratings

A rather tepid first-half, where Chelsea had the ball a lot but created very little, was followed by a slightly less tepid second, where Chelsea had the ball even more but still created very little. The only difference between the two halves really was that Newcastle created absolutely nothing in the second 45, whereas in the first half they had a couple dangerous opportunities, even hitting the crossbar.

Newcastle lead the Premier League in least amount of possession per game, and that’s precisely what they set out to do. They let Chelsea have the ball, defended deep with 10-11 men behind the ball at all times and challenged the visitors to break them down. Chelsea have had plenty of trouble in doing that at the Bridge and didn’t seem to have any less trouble with it this time either.

The work in progress remains in progress.

Carefree.

  • Just one change from last weekend, as a fit again N’Golo Kanté replaced Ross Barkley in the starting lineup.
  • Barkley first sub on, replacing Mount. Emerson then replaced James, who had to go off injured. Michy
  • Holding our breath on Reece James injury prognosis. It looked like it could be a pretty bad one, on his right knee. Hopefully it’s not, but it didn’t look great.
  • Before today, Chelsea had won just once in the last six visits to St James’ Park. Now it’s one in seven.
  • Chelsea remain five points ahead of fifth place Manchester United, who play at Anfield tomorrow. Spurs, Arsenal also drop two points each this weekend.
